What the specs mean for your build
The 40A reality. A 400W array on a 12V bank draws 400 ÷ 12.8 × 1.25 ≈ 39A — exactly this controller’s ceiling, which is why “520W on 12V” is a rating, not a plan. The same 400W on a 24V bank needs only ~20A and leaves room to double the array. Size on the current, not the marketing watts.
The cold-morning check. With a 100V ceiling, series strings need the standard check: three 22V-Voc panels (66V STC) reach ~73V at −10°C — fine; four (88V) reach ~97V — no margin, and the honest answer is the 150V class, not “close enough.”
The temp-sensor advantage. The included remote-battery-temperature input is unusual at this price and genuinely matters: it makes charging honest when batteries live in a different thermal world than the controller — temperature-compensated for lead-acid, and part of the safety story for any bank that can see cold. Most budget rivals skip it.
Who it’s for / Not for / Alternatives
Who it’s for: budget-first 12/24V builders whose current math lands 30–40A, who want to see volts/amps/cumulative Ah on a screen without opening an app, and who accept a 2-year warranty as the cost of the lowest dollars-per-amp around.
Not for: 48V banks (none of the 100V Tracers do this); buyers who want app monitoring in the box (the BT-1 adds cost and slots — at that point, compare the Renogy Rover below); or long-warranty buyers — if a 5-year term matters, the Victron premium is the price of it.
